Similar to other countries, a Chinese visa is a permit issued to a foreigner by the Chinese visa authorities for entry into, exit from or transit through Chinese territory. Visas are divided into the following classifications, depending on the purpose of travel, which are marked with Chinese phonetic letters (D, Z, X, F, L, G, C, J-1 and J-2) respectively.

Visa D - For permanent resident of China.
Visa Z - Issued to those who come to China to take up employment and to their accompanying family members.
Visa X - Issued to those who come to China for study, advanced study or for job-training for a period of 6 months or more.
Visa F - To visit, teach, do business, or for cultural, scientific or technological exchanges for less than 6 months up to 12 months.
Visa L - For travel, visiting friends and relatives or to deal with some private matters. A group visa can be obtained if more than 9 people come together for travel.
Visa G - For stopover in China.
Visa C - For crews of airplanes, trains and ships who are on regular visits to China. Their accompanying family members are issued with the same type of visa.
Visa J-1 - For foreign resident correspondents in China.
Visa J-2 - For foreign correspondents who make a short trip to China on reporting tasks.

A Residence Permit is also known as a multiple entry Z/X visa. After obtaining a visa for entry into China, all foreigners, for the residency purpose of work and study, must undertake several procedures in order to obtain a valid Residence Permit. This allows for the holder to reside in the municipality of registration for a period of, generally, one to three years, renewable indefinitely provided certain conditions are met.
